E. D. SASSOON & CO.
In 1867 Mr. Elias David Sassoon, a son of the head of the China firm, established the separate concern of E. D. Sassoon and Co., which became a limited liability company in 1921, and has developed into a well-known banking company.
In the days of the opium trade, E.D. Sassoon and Co. had a godown for storing opium on Pedders Hill (alongside Wyndham Street) which was situated next door to the old German Club. It was walled and, as customary in those days (even up to the Eighties) well guarded, during a period in which lawless elements were prone to stage raiding attacks on the godowns of the merchants here. Tradition has it that this place also had a gun mounted - probably the origin of the popular name of "Sassoon's Fort" which it is said was at one time applied to the premises. Reference to the custom of mounting guns and guards at the godowns in the early days of Hongkong has already been made in connexion with the history of Jardines (see 2-8-33),
Both the parent firm of David Sassoon and its off-shoot are to-day in a flourishing state, and are examples of the pioneering enterprise of the Jewish merchants who came to the Colony in its early period.
